Jelly Roll’s attempt to expand beyond music may have hit another wall.
According to the latest reports, WWE has cancelled his planned appearance at the September 18 episode of Friday Night SmackDown in Texas. The singer was reportedly expected to participate in a wrestling segment, deliver a few speeches, and make a surprise appearance for the live audience.
That plan is now off the table.
WWE Pulls the Plug
The reported decision comes after weeks of criticism aimed at Jelly Roll following his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. His jokes about President Donald Trump sparked backlash, but the criticism has grown beyond those comments.
A large part of the audience now seems focused on Jelly Roll’s public persona. Fans who once viewed him as an authentic, rough-around-the-edges artist are questioning whether that image was ever genuine in the first place.
That matters because Jelly Roll has been trying to build a career across several areas of entertainment. He has pursued television appearances, acting opportunities, comedy, and professional wrestling. The problem is that each new move has created another opportunity for audiences to turn on him.
Reports claim WWE and TKO Group Holdings decided the backlash had become too risky. Jelly Roll had allegedly rehearsed a full performance for the event and was furious when the appearance was cancelled. There are even claims that his team is considering legal action, though those details remain part of the current reporting rather than a confirmed public case.
Another Career Door Closes
WWE previously had a reason to bring Jelly Roll back. His earlier appearances reportedly helped the company’s ratings, making another event seem like an easy win.
This time, the promotion appears to have reached a different conclusion. If the reports are accurate, WWE now sees Jelly Roll as a possible liability instead of a ratings boost.
That would make this one of the clearest examples yet of entertainment companies distancing themselves from him. His reported removal from an NBC Halloween special and his alleged exit from Tulsa King have already raised questions about where his career is heading.
I keep coming back to the timing. Jelly Roll wanted recognition outside music, but the more he appears in other entertainment spaces, the more scrutiny follows him. The controversy from Kimmel did not stay confined to late-night television. It followed him into wrestling, acting, comedy, and every other lane he was trying to enter.
The Bigger Problem
The issue for Jelly Roll may be less about one political joke and more about the audience feeling betrayed. His entire brand was built around authenticity and connection with ordinary fans. Once people decide that image was manufactured, every new appearance starts to look like another business move.
That is a difficult reputation to recover from.
For now, the September 18 WWE appearance is reportedly cancelled, and the company may be considering whether Jelly Roll should return at all. If that happens, it would be another major entertainment platform closing its doors.
The lesson is simple: audiences can forgive a bad joke. They are much less forgiving when they believe the person telling it has been selling them a fake version of himself.
