The View has been dealing with backlash for weeks, and now the fallout appears to be reaching outside ABC.
The latest development centers on Saturday Night Live, NBC, and a Halloween special that reportedly would have featured Sunny Hostin, Joy Behar, and Whoopi Goldberg in a Trump-focused comedy sketch. The punchline here is obvious: this was supposed to be a friendly lane for them. SNL has spent years making this kind of political material. Yet this time, NBC apparently looked at what was planned and decided it wanted no part of the mess.
That is the part I find hilarious.
What happened
The reported sketch was set for SNL's October 31 Halloween special. According to the account, the hosts were going to appear in a bit mocking the Trump administration, complete with a pumpkin referred to as a "Trumpkin" hanging from the ceiling while tomatoes and trash were thrown at it.
Another part of the planned sketch allegedly involved Whoopi Goldberg playing an unnamed Halloween character while women meant to represent MAGA wives were mocked onstage. The bit reportedly included eggs, shaving cream, and the usual SNL-style contempt dressed up as comedy.
NBC executives were said to have backed away after the hosts' recent political rally appearances and repeated controversy around their public comments. Even more surprising, Lorne Michaels reportedly pushed for the hosts to be removed from the special.
That is the one part I did not expect. I have been very critical of Lorne Michaels and modern SNL for a long time. The show is nowhere near what it used to be. Still, if he really stepped in and said this was a bad idea, then credit where it is due. Somebody at NBC finally noticed that beating the same political drum for the millionth time is not comedy. It is just noise.
Why it matters
This matters because The View hosts have built a whole routine around attacking their audience's political enemies, then acting shocked when people stop pretending it is charming.
Joy, Whoopi, and Sunny always seem to land in the same place. If the reaction is bad, they blame the audience. If the opportunity disappears, they blame the network. If the joke falls flat, they blame everyone except themselves.
Now they are reportedly furious behind the scenes, with agents and managers involved, and are looking at legal options to get the sketch reinstated. They are also said to be preparing to bring this up at another political rally next week.
That tracks. When the machine stops rewarding them, suddenly it becomes a free speech crisis.
The bigger pattern
This also fits a larger problem around The View. ABC keeps letting the show drift deeper into political spectacle while ratings pressure keeps building. Meanwhile, the hosts appear desperate to stay relevant outside their own daytime bubble.
We have already seen reports about other studios backing away from them. Now NBC and SNL may be doing the same.
That should tell them something. When even Hollywood institutions start thinking you are too toxic or too repetitive to book, the issue might not be the audience. It might be you.
Final take
I do not think SNL suddenly became brave. I think NBC saw a sketch that could blow up in its face and decided the headache was not worth it.
Still, the result is the same. The View hosts were reportedly lined up for a major Halloween appearance, and now the whole thing appears to be getting scrapped.
For once, the joke was not on the audience. It was on them.
