Spider-Man Is Winning, So Disney Is Reaching For The Same Old Trap

*Spider-Man: Brand New Day* is reportedly sitting above $1.7 billion worldwide, and instead of learning the obvious lesson, Disney leadership appears ready to drag the character back into the same ideological churn fans keep rejecting.

Spider-Man Is Winning, So Disney Is Reaching For The Same Old Trap

Spider-Man: Brand New Day should be the cleanest possible signal to Hollywood: give audiences a character they love, respect the world around him, and they will show up.

That is the part Disney never seems to absorb for more than five minutes.

What happened

According to the discussion now circulating around Disney, Sony, and Marvel’s ongoing Spider-Man arrangement, Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro is reportedly using the success of Brand New Day as a launchpad for a renewed push around diversity, equity, and inclusion in future Spider-Man films.

The problem is not that Spider-Man has a big global audience. He obviously does. The problem is the corporate assumption that “global audience” automatically means the property needs to be reworked through a DEI checklist.

That is where fans start checking out.

Spider-Man does not need executives in conference rooms deciding which comic-book characters should be reshaped to satisfy modern institutional language. The character already connects worldwide because the fundamentals are universal: responsibility, sacrifice, humor under pressure, ordinary life colliding with extraordinary danger.

That is the whole point.

Why it matters

The timing makes this even more ridiculous. Brand New Day is reportedly over $1.7 billion worldwide and still climbing, which means the audience already gave Sony and Marvel the answer. They did not need a lecture. They did not need a corporate manifesto. They needed a Spider-Man movie that felt like Spider-Man.

Sony is still the party with the real final say over these solo films, even with Disney and Marvel deeply involved. That matters, because if Sony is smart, it treats this moment as proof that the character works best when the fanbase is not being treated like an obstacle.

Disney, on the other hand, keeps confusing criticism with hostility. When fans push back on DEI-first decision-making, they are not saying every character has to look the same forever or that nobody new can be introduced. They are saying the story should come first, the source material should matter, and beloved characters should not be treated like raw material for an executive branding exercise.

That is not complicated. Hollywood just likes pretending it is.

The bigger pattern

This is the pattern that has damaged so much of the MCU already. A major franchise hits a rough patch, fans explain what turned them off, and then the studio reframes the backlash as “noise” from people who simply do not understand the enlightened corporate mission.

That attitude is poison.

It tells the audience that their money is welcome, but their judgment is not. It tells longtime fans that loyalty only matters until they notice the product changing in ways that feel forced, cynical, or openly dismissive of the material they came to see.

Spider-Man should be the easiest character in the world to protect from that. He is not broken. He does not need to be reinvented into a symbol for whatever language Disney wants to impress investors with this quarter.

He needs good villains, grounded stakes, a strong Peter Parker, and a world that feels like it was built for story instead of messaging.

Final take

If Sony wants another massive win after Brand New Day, the path is obvious: keep Spider-Man focused, character-driven, and fan-aware.

Let Disney sell the merchandise. Let Marvel help with continuity. But do not hand the creative steering wheel to the same mindset that keeps turning entertainment into a corporate values seminar.

Spider-Man just proved the audience is still there.

Now the question is whether Hollywood can resist sabotaging the victory.
