Jelly Roll’s Next Kimmel Appearance Could Push More Fans Away

Jelly Roll appears ready to return to Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2027, even as backlash over his previous appearance continues to grow.

Jelly Roll’s Next Kimmel Appearance Could Push More Fans Away

Jelly Roll’s Jimmy Kimmel appearance was supposed to be a fun detour from music. Instead, it became another headache for an artist already facing serious questions about his public image.

Now, after weeks of backlash over his Donald Trump jokes, Jelly Roll has reportedly confirmed that he plans to work with Jimmy Kimmel again in 2027. He has not revealed the exact date or format, but the message to unhappy fans was blunt: if they do not like his comedy, they can stop supporting him.

That is a strange approach when your audience is already walking away.

What Jelly Roll said

Jelly Roll’s explanation is that his time on Kimmel showed him he has another passion beyond music. He says comedy is something he has always wanted to explore, and he appears to believe that mocking the president is simply harmless entertainment.

His argument is that Donald Trump is famous, so jokes about him should not automatically be viewed as political. I do not buy that. When the subject is the president of the United States, political humor is political humor. You can call it lighthearted. You can call it comedy. You can call it whatever you want, but the subject matter does not magically change because the punchline is weak.

And that is where the backlash really comes from. A lot of viewers did not see the Kimmel appearance as bold or funny. They saw it as predictable late-night television dressed up as something rebellious.

The problem with attacking your own audience

What makes this worse is Jelly Roll’s response to the criticism. Instead of recognizing that longtime fans might feel alienated, he has repeatedly suggested that people should stop listening to his music if they disagree with him.

That is not how you rebuild trust.

Fans are allowed to dislike a performance. They are allowed to think the jokes were flat. They are even allowed to question whether the persona they supported still feels genuine. Calling those people “haters” does not answer the criticism. It just tells them that their loyalty was conditional on never pushing back.

I keep coming back to that part because it says more than the jokes themselves.

What happens next?

The timing is also curious. There has been speculation about Jimmy Kimmel’s future on ABC, including talk that the show could change or end after 2026. Nothing has been confirmed, but Kimmel has also discussed spending an extended period in Italy next year.

If the program is still around, Jelly Roll could return for another guest-host appearance or a planned sketch. Based on what he has said, this may be more than a one-night cameo. He seems interested in making comedy part of his broader entertainment career.

That might be fine for Jelly Roll. The audience gets to decide whether it is fine for them.

My view is simple: taking a break would probably help him more than doubling down. Six months away from the spotlight might give people time to move on. Returning to Kimmel while telling unhappy fans to leave only makes the whole thing look like an insult.

The bigger issue is not one bad joke. It is the growing distance between Jelly Roll’s carefully built image and the way he now treats people who helped build it.
